Zerothree tags 'Something Returns' as Melodic House & Techno. Other listings for the same release call it trance outright. Neither is lying. The record sitting in the gap between the two tags earns more of a look than either one manages on its own.

The supersaw is the whole argument. It's oversized on purpose, and at 1:10 it drops into a fist-in-the-air moment that reads as straight trance whatever the tag above it says.

The single credits Against All Ødds and Laura van Dam and landed 24 July as two mixes, a 'radio edit' at 3:34 and an 'extended mix' at 5:27. Nine minutes and change across the release, split between a playlist-length cut and a set-length one. That's a record built to get played twice, two different ways, not picked over for a single edit. Same track. Two jobs.

It isn't Against All Ødds' first trip to Zerothree. 'Echo Silence' landed on the same label earlier this year. This is a working relationship, not a placement bought with a feature name. Van Dam brings the other half of the credibility. Her own show, Capture Radio, aired its 102nd episode on 2 August, eight days after this single came out. A working host lending a track her name deserves more weight than a guest slot rented for the reach.

Whichever tag holds up, the disagreement over it says more than either side would alone. This beat is built out of records that won't sit still between melodic house and whatever sits next to it. A single tagged one thing while reading as another is doing exactly that job. That's the point.
